Researchers at Bialystok University of Technology have developed an innovative solution that could revolutionize the work of auto repair shops. The patent for a multi-arm head for simultaneous handling of multiple threaded connections was based on an engineering thesis and is the result of cooperation between a student and an experienced scientist.
The essence of innovation
Unlike conventional solutions used in auto repair shops, the new head introduces a number of revolutionary improvements. “The innovation in our head is the fact that we can smoothly change the spacing of the bolts we tighten” [1] – explains Dariusz Szpica, Ph.D., professor of PB. This seemingly simple improvement is of great practical importance, especially in the context of handling different vehicle models.
A key element of the innovation is the use of specially designed couplings in each operating arm. This solution effectively eliminates problems that existed in previous designs. “We have used couplings by design, which protect the entire head from overload and prevent the fact that if one of the threaded connections tightens faster than the others, it will be eliminated from tightening and we will be able to tighten more connections,” [1] emphasizes Prof. Szpica.
Earlier patents in this area faced a number of limitations. The main problem was that tightening one screw all the way to the end caused the entire mechanism to stop, forcing manual completion of the work. In addition, there was a risk of damaging both the device and the threaded connections themselves by excessive torque. The new design effectively eliminates these problems.
Functionality and adaptability
The invention is distinguished by its versatility. The head not only allows smooth adjustment of bolt spacing, but also allows precise determination of tightening torque. “The tightening torque of threaded connections can be determined with this device,” [1] reveals Prof. Szpica. This functionality is crucial for the safety and durability of connections.
The device finds particular use in the automotive industry, especially in vulcanization shops and vehicle mechanic workshops. “When we have an increase in the intensity of visits to vulcanization shops for tire replacements such a head can be an addition to the workshop equipment,” [1] notes Prof. Szpica. This is especially important in the context of seasonal tire changes, when speed and precision of service are crucial.
Importance for industry
The patent (No. P.441317) is an example of successful cooperation between academia and industry. It shows how projects started at the level of an engineering thesis can turn into practical solutions with real market potential. The cooperation between Jakub Warakomski, M.Sc., and Dariusz Szpica, Ph.D., has resulted in a solution that can significantly affect the efficiency of automotive workshops.
A particular advantage of the invention is its adaptability. The design allows the head to be easily adapted to different bolt spacings, making it a versatile tool in an automotive workshop. This feature is of particular importance in the context of the variety of wheel designs in different makes and models of vehicles.
